South Lakeland Local Plan Review overview

Last Updated: 3 April 2024

Westmorland and Furness Council Update

From 1 April 2023, South Lakeland District Council is superseded by the new unitary Westmorland and Furness Council, which also replaces Eden District, Barrow Borough and parts of Cumbria County Council.

The Westmorland and Furness Consolidated Planning Policy Framework is comprised of the Development Plans from previous Local Planning Authorities (Barrow, Eden and South Lakeland District Councils and Cumbria County Council) and other planning documents and guidance. The Framework is used to determine planning applications for the development and use of land and buildings.

Westmorland and Furness Council is responsible for preparing a new development plan for the whole District which will supersede existing legacy District and County planning policy documents. Until the existing legacy plans and policies of the former authorities are superseded they will continue to apply to the areas they applied to before re-organisation.

South Lakeland Local Plan Review - Position at April 2023

The remainder of this webpage and three accompanying webpages record the work undertaken on the review of the South Lakeland Local Plan. The Westmorland and Furness Council will determine priorities for Local Plan making in the new planning authority area. It is anticipated that much of the work undertaken for the South Lakeland Local Plan Review will be of value in future Local Plan preparation for Westmorland and Furness, including the early assessment of sites put forward in the 2020 and 2021 Call for Sites.
