Audit of accounts and budget consultation

Last Updated: 3 April 2024

Every year our accounts are checked by auditors. When we appoint new auditor we publish a 'notice of appointment'. You can see who the auditors are and how you can inspect the accounts they will audit.

You can comment on the budget and let us know your views through our budget consultations.

Annual audit of accounts

Our annual accounts must be audited by independent auditors. For accounts until 2017/18 the auditors have been appointed by Public Sector Audit Appointments Limited (PSAA). From 2018/19 the Council opted into a national process run by PSAA.  Grant Thornton (UK) LLP have been appointed for five years for the accounts from 2018/19 to 2022/23.

Notice of appointment of auditor to South Lakeland District Council from 2018/19

Under Section 8(2) of the Local Audit and Accountability Act 2014, the Council must publish a notice relating to the appointment of its auditor.

For audits of the accounts from 2018/19, Public Sector Audit Appointments Limited (PSAA) is responsible for appointing an auditor to principal local government and police bodies if they have chosen to opt into its national auditor appointment arrangements.  South Lakeland District Council opted into this arrangement.

At its meeting on 14 December 2017, the PSAA board appointed Grant Thornton (UK) LLP to audit the accounts of South Lakeland District Council for a period of five years, for the accounts from 2018/19 to 2022/23. This appointment is made under regulation 13 of the Local Audit (Appointing Person) Regulations 2015.

You can inspect the accounts to be audited, ask questions and lodge objections with the auditor.
