Council Tax support fund

Last Updated: 3 April 2024

In response to pressures of cost of living, the Government announced in December 2022, that it would provide local authorities in England with £100m of new grant funding to support economically vulnerable people and households in their local area. The fund will be used to provide council tax relief, alongside existing local council tax support schemes.

Billing authorities will provide all recipients of local council tax support with up to an additional £25 towards their bill, during the financial year 2023-2024. This support is being provided as a reduction in their annual council tax bill.

This much needed support for claimants will be processed without the need for an application and the annual council tax bills confirming the reduction for council tax support recipients from 1 April 2023 has been sent to eligible households.

Westmorland and Furness Council will also have the discretion to use the rest of the funding to reduce the liability of council tax payers outside of their formal local council tax scheme design. Updates on this will be provided in due course.
