Areas with no scheduled elections this year

Councillors serve a four year term of office. Most wards are represented by three councillors and have three elections during the four year period. Some wards are represented by two members and therefore only have two elections during the four year period. The changes to the number of district wards and councillor allocations were brought about by the Further Electoral Review in 2018

Sixteen of the eighteen district wards have an election this year and some of these areas also have parish elections scheduled.

Cartmel and Kendal North are two-councillor wards and do not have district elections in 2019.

The district ward of Kendal North

Kendal North is a two-councillor ward and doesn't have a district election this year. This ward isn't scheduled to have a parish election either, as Kendal Town Council isn't up for election until 2022.

Parts of the district ward of Cartmel

Cartmel is also a two-councillor ward and doesn't have a district election this year. However, there are parish elections for some areas of Cartmel and a district election for part of a parish that falls partly within the district wards of Cartmel and Grange.

We're currently conducting a community governance review. This is a legal process that allows us to look at, amongst other things, the electoral arrangements for the parishes within the South Lakeland area.

We've made draft recommendations to alter the electoral cycle for the parishes of Lower Allithwaite and Lower Holker, so that all of their elections are scheduled for a year when there's also a district election. This will allow them to share the cost of the election with South Lakeland District Council.
