Winnie's joy means we need another pop-up shop
11 April 2017
Winnie Poaty’s dream of running her own shop has finally come true.
But it means we no longer have a Pop-Up Shop to offer to other budding entrepreneurs.
Our Pop-Up Shop in Kendal town centre is a remarkable success story. Over the past two years 48 tenants have been offered a short, affordable, low-risk lease to get a taste of high street trading.
Many enjoyed it so much they have gone on to open their own shops and businesses.
Winnie first tried the Pop-Up Shop on Finkle Street in 2015, then twice more before asking us if she could have a longer lease.
“I knew the shop was perfect for me. I was learning so much, gaining in confidence and my business, which had only been online before, was doing so well. Each time my short term lease ended I felt sad, so I’m delighted I’m staying here this time,” she said.
Impressed by her determination and success, we have offered Winnie a three year lease for her women’s fashionwear business.
Our spokesperson said: “Our pioneering Pop-Up Shop has allowed tenants to try out trading on the high street for the first time. Participating retailers have been able to road test their retail concept and gain valuable experience dealing with customers.
“To be able to continue offering this opportunity we now need another small shop. We want to hear from any landlords with an empty unit who are willing to get involved in this project and generate rental income from their otherwise unoccupied commercial property.”
The Pop-Up Shop initiative is run by Invest in South Lakeland, our economic growth programme which is aimed at attracting new investment, encouraging business expansion and promoting the area as a quality location for business. One of its key aims is to enhance the district’s retail offer and reduce the number of empty shops.
