We are urging businesses to get on their bikes
31 January 2017
We are encouraging businesses to apply for bike parking grants in a bid to get more people cycling.
The scheme offers businesses up to £1,000 for the purchase and installation of stands or bike boxes for employees to safely secure their cycles.
It is hoped the initiative will increase the numbers of people commuting by bike across the district, help to cut rush hour congestion, lead to improved air quality and result in a healthier, fitter local workforce.
Nearly a quarter of all car trips are made by people going to and from work. Many of these are relatively short journeys, of less than five miles, which could easily be cycled.
Our Public Protection Manager, Fiona Inston, said: “We’re committed to helping our residents lead healthy, active lifestyles and this scheme helps with the practicality of storing a bike during the workday. The Council is working together with Cumbria County Council to find ways to make active travel more accessible. It is beneficial for our health and our environment to make more journeys by bike or on foot and we hope businesses will embrace this opportunity to benefit their employees.”
Businesses can apply for the scheme if they are an existing company with premises anywhere in the district, are able to complete the works within six months of the grant being offered and can contribute at least 30% of the cost, excluding VAT.
Funding will not be granted if the measures are temporary, if the works are a refurbishment of existing bike parking or if work starts before a business receives their award letter.
