Support for families in South Lakeland over half term
26 October 2020
South Lakeland District Council is part of the multi-agency Cumbria Local Resilience Forum (CLRF) response to the coronavirus pandemic, led by Cumbria County Council.
It is also part of the South Lakeland Community Resilience Group which has been supporting voluntary food groups and initiatives throughout the summer months and will continue to do so in months to come.
Cumbria County Council is working with local food initiatives to ensure that every pupil entitled to free school meals continues to receive them over the half-term holiday this week.
If anybody in South Lakeland is experiencing hardship over the holiday period, details of groups and agencies which can provide support for parents in need of food for their children, as well as childcare, activities, and other support services, can be found at: https://www.cumbria.gov.uk/elibrary/Content/Internet/537/1459/17949/44126155130.pdf?timestamp=44128101729
Councillor Suzie Pye, SLDC Portfolio Holder for Health, Wellbeing and Financial Resilience, said: "It has been amazing to see the community response to the pandemic in our area. So many different groups and charities have been working together, alongside SLDC and Cumbria County Council, to ensure that no child need go hungry in South Lakeland. There is now a local food initiative in every area of South Lakeland, run by dedicated volunteers. We have also seen a huge response from businesses and members of the public, all keen to do what they can to provide for those in need. I would urge anyone who is finding it hard to feed their family, whether claiming free school meals or not, to use the support directory to find their local food provision.
"We are facing huge challenges, but partnership working is ensuring a co-ordinated and effective response in Cumbria to all aspects of the coronavirus pandemic."
Residents who need urgent help finding food and essential items, or if they are struggling to cope with their current situation for whatever reason, are advised to call the county council’s Support Helpline on 0800 783 1966 (Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm, Friday 9am to 4.30pm).
