South Lakeland ranked as one of the best places to raise a family
13 September 2016
South Lakeland has been recognised as one of the best places in Britain to raise a family.
Results of a survey by the Halifax show the district in the top 15 local authority areas in a ‘Children’s Quality of Life’ report.
South Lakeland is ranked 14th nationally, just ahead of 15th placed Harrogate, and coming second only to the Ribble Valley (sixth position overall) in the north west.
The top three places in the rankings all go to Scottish local authority areas, with the Orkney Islands, Shetland and the Western Isles at positions one, two and three respectively.
The index is produced annually by the Halifax at a local authority district level from 377 local authority districts in Great Britain.
The survey considers a number of factors that govern the environment in which children are brought up.
The top ranking areas are more likely to have high levels of employment, bigger houses where children are more likely to have their own bedroom, relatively low traffic volumes and population densities and where adults rate personal wellbeing as high.
South Lakeland’s strong showing corresponds with South Lakeland District Council’s (SLDC’s) own Quality of Life Survey results, which show 89% of people questioned in the district are satisfied with their local area as a place to live.
The council’s independent Quality of Life Survey is undertaken every year and includes questions on council services and what makes somewhere a good place to live.
The Halifax survey ranking has been welcomed by SLDC Leader Councillor Giles Archibald, who said: “This shows what those of us who live here already know, that South Lakeland is a great place to live and a fantastic place to raise a family.
“Our Council Plan priorities on enabling 1,000 new affordable homes for rent and 1,000 new higher paid jobs are very much in line with creating the conditions for a happy family life and we know from our own surveys that these priorities are in line with what our residents want.
“We will continue to work very hard to ensure that South Lakeland remains the best place to live, work and explore.’’
