Grant funding helps bring a bit of Rio to streets of Kendal

12 September 2016

Organisers of a new event have been praised for bringing a bit of Rio to the streets of Kendal at the weekend.

South Lakeland District Council’s (SLDC’s) Portfolio holder for Culture and Wellbeing, Councillor Chris Hogg, said Saturday’s first-ever Kendal Carnival Street Party had been an ‘excellent’ event.

SLDC helped to support the Carnival Street Party, working with the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to make a special grant available as part of a programme to help areas to deliver events, festivals or coordinated marketing campaigns that help attract visitors to areas affected by December’s floods.

The street party helped to extend the popular Kendal Torchlight Carnival, staged on Friday night, into a second day, when the town centre was taken over by a host of carnival arts performances and workshops.

Councillor Hogg said: “It really brought a bit of the colour, energy, sights and sounds that we’ve seen at the Rio Olympics and Paralympics to Kendal town centre.

“It was an excellent event and after the wet weather for the Torchlight procession the night before it was also lovely to see the sun come out for the carnival on Saturday!’’

SLDC’s economic development team has been administering the grants scheme on behalf of the LEP, with applications needing to demonstrate clear economic benefits and increased footfall to those flood-affected areas, with projects delivered between 1 March and 30 September 2016. The application deadline has now passed so no new applications can be accepted.

Grants have been given to events including Kendal Food Festival in March, Kendal Mountain Festival’s free big screen open-air cinema event in Grasmere at the end of June, the Windermere Boat and Adventure Show in July, a food festival, music festival and a cycle event in Sedbergh during May and June and the Festival of the Fells in Ambleside and the Lakes Sundown Folk Festival in Kendal, both of which are happening later this month.
