Kendal Market Place Improvement Scheme
This project helped re-create a versatile user friendly space suitable for hosting a wide range of community-focused events and markets. The Market Place is becoming a more welcoming, atmospheric and safe public space, which should encourage a vibrant café culture, evening economy, and a quality retail environment attractive to businesses, residents and visitors.
Works to date
Phase 1: Work involved the upgrading of street lighting, removal of the unused telephone box, and two silver birch trees and the planter pit they had outgrown.
Phase 2 October 2017: included new seating around the lighting columns being installed and the electricity bollards were upgraded which included a new water supply. This work will enable market traders, event organisers and other users to have a reliable power source. Contractors replaced the broken drainage channels and grates at either side of the Market Place.
Phase 3 February and March 2018: Involved replacing the existing stone seating, some of which was broken, with a bespoke and robust design. Chris Brammall, the award-winning Cumbria sculptor and metalworker, has created a stylish seating and centrepiece for the area.
This scheme was led by a project board which includes Kendal Futures, SLDC, Cumbria County Council, Kendal Civic Society, Kendal Town Council, Kendal BID and the Cumbria Chamber of Commerce. This project is now complete.
