Kendal Market Place Improvement Scheme
This project helped re-create a versatile user friendly space suitable for hosting a wide range of community-focused events and markets. Market Place is becoming a more welcoming, atmospheric and safe public space, which should encourage a vibrant café culture, evening economy, and a quality retail environment attractive to businesses, residents and visitors.
Works to date
The phase 1 work involved the upgrading of street lighting, removal of the unused telephone box, and two silver birch trees and the planter pit they had outgrown. In October new seating around the lighting columns were installed and the electricity bollards and water supplies were upgraded. This work will enable market traders, event organisers and other users to have a reliable power source going forward. Contractors replaced the broken drainage channels and grates at either side of the Market Place
The phase 2 work will see the stone circle area upgraded with new seating replacing the current stone seats, these works should start and complete in February.
This scheme is led by a project board which includes Kendal Futures, SLDC, Cumbria County Council, Kendal Civic Society, Kendal Town Council, Kendal BID and the Cumbria Chamber of Commerce.
