Travelling by air, coach or rail?
Well that's straightforward too - just read on for more information.  Don't forget the alternative transport options from bus or mini-coach to cycle, boat or ferry and a very good local rail service to Windermere.

For total relaxation, leave your car at your hotel or accommodation and take an alternative form of transport to travel round the district, helping us to preserve the beautiful landscape you have come to visit. 

By Road

From the south leave the M6 at Junction 36 and follow the A590/A591. From the north leave the M6 at Junction 39 and follow the A6.

Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds/Bradford, Liverpool and Newcastle airports offer easy access to the area. Manchester Airport has its own rail station with direct services to Windermere and Barrow-in Furness.

By Rail

Stations for the area include Lancaster and Oxenholme - the Lake District (near Kendal) on the main West Coast line. There is a branch line connecting Oxenholme to Kendal and Windermere.Steam Train image

Trains run direct from Lancaster to Arnside, Grange-over-Sands, Ulverston and Barrow via the Furness line. The historic Settle/Carlisle Railway line runs through the east of the District, with stations at Dent and Garsdale.
