Empty Homes – FAQ’s
Why has the council become involved with empty homes and what
are the benefits to the community?
• There are about 1,000 empty homes in South Lakeland.
• There is a lack of affordable housing in this area.
• Roughly 5,000 people are waiting for a council house, but
there are only 3,000 council homes.
By making the most of existing empty homes we could reduce the
number of new homes that need to be built each year. It makes sense
to work with owners to help them reoccupy their empty homes.
