Conservation Policy and Guidance

The South Lakeland Local Plan 2006 has policies to control development affecting the districts historic built and natural heritage, including:

  • countryside, landscape and the Arnside- Silverdale AONB
  • nature conservation interests, including SSSIs and sites of international importance
  • conservation areas and listed buildings
The Local Plan also contains non-statutory policies to promote the positive conservation and management of these heritage assets.

Examples are:-
Conservation Areas promoting improvement and good management through grant-aid, enhancement schemes and a programme of Conservation Areas appraisals (including boundary reviews).

Design Guidance - preparation of design guidance and Conservation Area appraisals, with encouragement for communities to assess what makes their town or village special.

Kendal Castle promoting good management in partnership with the Kendal Castle Consultative Group.

Lancaster Canal - promoting good management and restoration in partnership with the Northern Reaches Restoration Group.

Guidance and Advice which we publish includes:
  • a Shop Fronts Design Guide and advisory leaflets on aspects of historic building repair
  • a Conservation Area Appraisal for Kendal, which included a boundary review and an Article 4 Direction to control the loss of architectural features.
  • a Design Guide for Grange-over-Sands.
