Waste and Recycling Guide - B

Bank Statements

Householders can shred bank and credit card statements then put the shredded paper in the blue paper box or in your home compost bin.

Batteries, Car

Car batteries should be treated as hazardous waste. They should be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre for safe disposal.

Batteries, Household

Re-chargeable batteries are widely available and should be used wherever possible. Please check the manufacturers instructions as it is not possible to use theses batteries in some household appliances, such as smoke alarms.

There are now battery recycling points in many electrical stores and supermarkets. There is also a collection point at South Lakeland House in Kendal..

Bedding

Bedding in a re-saleable condition can be taken to some of the charity shops in the district.

Bicycles

You could sell your old bike through the local newspaper or by putting an advert in the local shop window.

Blankets

Blankets in a re-saleable condition can be taken to some of the charity shops in the district.

BooksBooks

There are many second-hand bookshops throughout the area as well as a number of charity shops that accept books for re-sale. Books suitable for re-sale can also be left in any of the Oxfam banks at some of the recycling centres in the district.

Bric-a-Brac

There are many charity shops that re-sell bric-a-brac. Please ensure all goods are in a suitable condition for re-sale. If you have any doubt please ask the staff at the shop for advice.

Brushes

Old toothbrushes and washing-up brushes are ideal for DIY jobs.

Bubble Wrap

Re-use bubble wrap if possible. If you need to pack an item it is more environmentally friendly to use shredded or scrunched up paper than bubble wrap.

Business Waste

For advice about recycling in small businesses please contact Envirowise. There are also several companies in the region offering a collection service for paper, cardboard and confidential waste. Please refer to your local telephone directory for details of the companies in your area.
