and Non-Statutory Planning Documents

Updated October 2010

The South Lakeland Local Plan and Alterations form part of the Development Plan for the area of South Lakeland outside the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks. The Development Plan forms the basis for land use planning affecting the area. The Council adopted the Local Plan in 1997 and adopted the Alterations on 17 March 2006. A number of Local Plan policies were replaced on the adoption of the Local Development Framework (LDF) Core Strategy on 20 October 2010. The remaining Local Plan policies continue to form part of the statutory Development Plan for South Lakeland District (outside the National Parks). For details of replaced and remaining policies, see the Update Note

The Development Plan also includes the Cumbria Minerals and Waste Local Plan prepared by Cumbria County Council, which under the 2004 Act is preparing a replacement Minerals and Waste Local Development Framework

The South Lakeland Local Plan, and Local Plan Alterations documents were published in a combined 'Final Composite Plan' in September 2007.  All three documents may be viewed or downloaded below  via our Document Browser, together with an Update Note, detailing implications for the Local Plan of the adoption of the Core Strategy on 20 October 2010.

You can download the documents as single files but please note that due to the large file sizes it will take around 3 hours to download the whole document over a typical dialup connection and up to 25 minutes via Broadband. Because of this they are also available split into several smaller files, one for each section of the document plus one for each map and appendix.

Interactive Proposals Map

An online interactive proposals map allows users to view land designations and allocations set out in the South Lakeland Local Plan 2006 (adopted 1997), and the South Lakeland Local Plan Alteration 2006 (adopted 2006), as amended on the adoption of the Core Strategy - see above.

Saved Local Plan Policies

Under the 2004 Act, Local Plan policies adopted when the Act came into force in September 2004 were automatically saved after justification for 3 years (or, if adopted after September 2004, saved for 3 years from the date of adoption).

The Secretary of State confirmed that the South Lakeland Local Plan policies adopted in 1997 are saved beyond September 2007, until replaced by LDF policies - with the exception of 4 policies R3, C4, C17 and Tr6, which expired on 27 September 2007. The 4 expired policies are crossed out in the Final Composite Plan (September 2007).

Later, in November 2008, the Secretary of State confirmed that the South Lakeland Local Plan Alteration policies, adopted on 17th March 2006, are saved beyond March 2009, until replaced by LDF policies.
