Shopfront Design Toolkit
South Lakeland District Council
has published a Shopfront Design Toolkit. This piece of
design guidance was adopted as Supplementary Planning Guidance
(SPG) to the South Lakeland Local Plan 2006, in May 2004.
It provides specific advice to help
retailers and others plan appropriate and sensitive changes to
existing shopfronts, new shopfronts, advertisements and signage, so
that the traditional character of South Lakeland's towns and
villages is maintained and enhanced.
The guidance does not preclude the
introduction of modern contemporary shopfronts but seeks to ensure
that they are sensitively designed to fit in with their host
building and surroundings. The emphasis is on encouraging
quality materials and carefully chosen colour schemes. The
guidance encourages large companies to consider varying their
corporate images and colour schemes to suit the unique character of
the location and also advises businesses on how to create
appropriate access arrangements, lighting, security shutters,
blinds and signage. Examples of good design are also set
out.
PPG 12 advises that an SPG can be
taken into account as a material consideration in determining
planning applications. PPG 1 notes that applicants for
planning permission should be expected to demonstrate that they
have paid due regard to the development plan and to any adopted
SPG.
Please note that in accordance with
PPG 12 this guidance has been consulted upon prior to its adoption
as SPG. A statement identifying the consultation undertaken,
a list of the consultees and all of the representations submitted,
together with the Council's response to these comments, is
available by request.
