Sustainability Appraisal and Strategic Environment
Assessment
Most documents in the emerging South Lakeland Local
Development Framework will be subject to Sustainability Appraisal
at each stage in their preparation.
The requirement for Sustainability Appraisal incorporates the
European Union's requirement for the Strategic Environmental
Assessment of plans with 'significant environmental effects'.
The requirement for Sustainability Appraisal will relate to
all:
- Development Plan Documents (DPDs); and
- Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs).
It is not a requirement however for The Statement of Community
Involvement, Local Development Scheme or Annual Monitoring
Report.
The purpose of Sustainability Appraisal is to make sure that
emerging policies and proposals reflect environmental, social and
economic goals, to help achieve the overall aim of sustainable
development.
Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report
The methodology for appraising the sustainability of
forthcoming Development Plan Documents (DPDs) is set out in a
Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report, as required for each
Development Plan Document (DPD).
For the Core Strategy DPD a draft of this document
was available for comment until 28 October
2005. A revised Scoping Report for appraising
the sustainability of the Core Strategy DPD was used to appraise
the emerging Core Strategy.
The Council is currently preparing a Sustainability Appraisal
Scoping Report to appraise the Allocations of Land DPD.
