Parks, Grounds and Open Spaces
"Public space is all around us, a vital part of everyday life.
The streets we pass through, the places w
here
children play, or where we encounter nature and wild life; the
local parks in which we enjoy sports, walk the dog and sit at
lunchtime; or simply somewhere quiet to get away for a moment from
the bustle of a busy daily life. In other words, public space is
our open-space living room, our outdoor leisure centre."
Chairman of CABE space 2004.
Although the Lake District is blessed with magnificent
landscapes, well maintained parks and open spaces are of vital
importance to the everyday life and well-being of local people.
They also have a bearing on how visitors view the area as a place
to live and work. South Lakeland District Council is committed to
safe-guarding and maintaining it's major assets, of which parks and
open spaces are a key element for their recreational, natural and
cultural qualities.
We are responsible for:
- over 2 million square metres of amenity greenspace, including
grass areas, shrub borders, parks, hedges, floral displays,
woodland and football pitches.
- Approximately 150,000 ornamental trees.
- over 26 kilometres of walls and fencing.
- over 50 kilometres of pathways.
More information about grass cutting, horticultural maintenance
and other works taking place in the district is available from
Continental Landscapes using the link below.
