South Lakeland is responsible for major neighbourhood services
such as collection of household and commercial rubbish, leisure,
housing, benefits, street cleaning, car parks, licensing, food
inspection and tourism.
Fees and charges pay for part of council services, eg parking,
trade refuse, leisure. The remainder comes from the
Government (grant including business rates) and council tax.
Your council tax pays for about 53% of the Council’s budget.
An average household has a council tax bill of £166 for 2008/09
for South Lakeland’s services. Based on 10 instalments this
works out at £16.60 per month.
The Council also collects council tax for Cumbria County
Council, Cumbria Police Authority and Parish Councils.
Our annual accounts must be audited by independent
auditors appointed by the Audit Commission in England and
Wales.
Local electors have a right to inspect the accounts to be
audited. They may also ask questions and lodge objections with the
auditor.
