Local school children help to spread the smokefree message
Children in Years 5 & 6 from Crosscrake,
Flookburgh, Milnthorpe, Old Hutton and Selside primary schools took
part in a competition to design a poster organised by SLDC’s
Environmental Health and Culture & Economy groups to promote
the smoke free message in South Lakeland.
Over 100 entries were judged by Ian Stewart, Chairman of
Council, Lawrence Conway Head of Neighbourhood Services,Tina Burns
Environmental Health Officer and Imelda Winters Lewis Arts &
Events Officer.

The overall winner was Abigail Helliwell of
Milnthorpe Primary School.

The runners up were Thomas Ladds, Selside Endowed and Rosie
Russell –Cohen from Old Hutton CE. Highly commended went to David
Kay Flookburgh, Megan Robinson and Elsa McDonald both from Old
Hutton CE.
The winners were presented with their prizes at Kendal Town
Hall by the Chairman of Council Ian Stewart who said:
“I’m delighted that all the children who took part in the
competition embraced the Smoke Free message and thought about what
a smoke free environment would mean to them. There is some
excellent creative talent in our local primary schools and all the
children who took part are to be congratulated.“
The printed posters are being distributed to all council
premises, schools, doctors surgeries, health centres, libraries,
leisure centres and other family friendly public
places.
