Fresh Air For Everyone - Going Smoke Free

Since 1 July 2007, Regulations have been in place making it illegal to smoke in virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England. The new laws have been very well received and compliance within South Lakeland has been excellent. However, should you wish to report any incidents of unlawful smoking within this area you can do so by calling the Food and Safety Team on 01539 733333.

A leaflet giving general information on the Smoke Free Laws was sent out to businesses throughout South Lakeland at the end of February 2007, download a copy.

Update - May 2010

Smokers who have kicked the habit are on the rise in South Lakeland.

New figures from NHS Cumbria show more than 2,300 people stopped smoking between April and December last year.

More than 1,900 people set a quit date between January and May this year with the help of NHS Cumbria’s Stop Smoking Service.

In the last five months 251 people aged 14 to 60 living in South Lakeland had set a quit date through the free service.

After four weeks, 168 has successfully quit, with the district soaring with its 67% quit rate above the national average of 48%.

In total 76 women and 92 men had successfully gone smokefree.

Ten pregnant women in South Lakeland also became smokefree within a month.

Smokers who want to quit are four times more likely to succeed if they get support.

NHS Cumbria offers free, confidential advice and support through the Stop Smoking Service and participating pharmacies.

The Stop Smoking Service can provide appointments at community venues, your local GP surgery and over the telephone.
