Ulverston Mkt. Ent.Ulverston Market Hall

In 1874, The Local Board for the Town and Hamlet of Ulverston applied to The Most Noble Walter Francis Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry for his consent to erect "a covered market house for the better accommodation of persons attending the Market".

The Manor of Ulverston and the Market which, since 11th. September 1280, had been held on Thursday's weekly in the Market Place in Ulverston were part of the ancient estates of the family of the Duke and his son and heir, the Earl of Dalkieth.

Under the lease, the rights and privileges of Ulverston's free street markets and fairs were leased from the Duke, with a 999 years term, for a payment of 5s. (25p) on the 31st. December each year.

The Market Hall was officially opened in 1878. The Hall was built in the Italian style on land which had formed the kitchen garden of Lightburn House (later the County Hotel). In 1935 a fire destroyed the original building, resulting in the present structure.
