What is a personal search?


Personal Searches are usually carried out by private search companies.

The data is available in view only format via a computer situated in our reception area.

Appointments must be booked in advance for this service.

Care must be taken when making notes from the data to avoid mistakes.

This Authority cannot be held responsible for errors in notes taken by the customer who would have no claim under Section 10 of the Local Land Charges Act, 1975, which relates to compensation for loss.  

What do I need to submit?

  • A full postal address for the property or land
  • A clear up-to-date plan, (preferably HM Land Registry) to a minimum scale of 1:2500 carrying the 'north' point and OS map grid reference with the area to be searched clearly outlined.

How do I submit a personal search of the Local Land Charge Register?

  • E-mail: landcharges@southlakeland.gov.uk - One e-mail per search with the property address in the subject box and please attach a plan as a pdf file.
  • By post to Local Land Charge Section, South Lakeland District Council, South Lakeland House, Lowther Street, Kendal LA9 4DL
  • By DX 63428 KENDAL

How much does it cost?

  • From 17 August 2010 there is no charge for personal inspection of the Local Land Charge Register 
Please allow a minimum of five working days after plan acceptance, however 95% of appointments are available within 4 to 5 working days, subject to any disruption as applicable to the service generally.  Once the request is validated you will be informed of an appointment date. Appointment times are between 10.00am and 3pm on the relevant day.  This is to reduce disruption to the general working of the service.
