Locality Working

We need to work more closely with our communities and groups … The key to strong communities lies in achieving a balance between active participation and better communication.  There is recognition that we need new approaches to strengthen community engagement enabling greater empowerment through capacity building within the community and voluntary sector, and new structures, which allow local area, based neighbourhood management." South Lakeland Sustainable Community Strategy 2008-2028

In partnership: Local Councils including Town & Parish Councils and Parish Meetings, Cumbria Association for Local Councils (CALC), Cumbria County Council (CCC) and South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) developed the way it involves people living in South Lakeland in decision making and local service delivery.

The objectives of locality working are:-
  • Engaging more effectively with local communities and enabling local people a greater say in how local services are developed and delivered
  • Enabling decision making and policy making to be better informed by local views and needs
  • Facilitating the greater involvement of key stakeholders, including the public, in order to improve services for the benefit of service users and the public generally
  • Strengthening the role of all Councillors in local decision making and influencing policy, and enhancing the community representation roles of Councillors.
Within the district there are a variety of facilities and services, and many areas have specific locally based initiatives.  Alongside this activity there is a range of formal and informal networks that bring communities together and represent their views and interests.

Local Area Partnerships (LAPs) are intended to complement and build on this activity and contribute to the objectives of locality working, using the diversity of local communities and existing structures to reflect local circumstances, bring people together and connect the range of activity within the district.
