'Any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality" (The Home Office).

Domestic violence can also include forced marriage and "honour" crimes.Woman

  • National statistics show that domestic violence affects 1 in 4 women in their lifetime.
  • On average, 2 women a week are killed by their partners - this accounts for 40% of all female homicides.
  • 30% of domestic abuse starts during pregnancy.
  • 89% of the victims of domestic violence are female.
  • 52% of child protection cases involve domestic violence.

 

Domestic Violence in Cumbria

  • Home Office Statistics and results from the British Crime Survey estimate that over 15,000 women and girls were victims of domestic abuse in Cumbria.
  • In 2011, there were more than 6,450 incidents of domestic violence reported to the police in Cumbria.
