Tackling Alcohol in South Lakeland

Bottles2Alcohol misuse in Cumbria is historically high, with high levels of hospital admissions as a result of alcohol when compared nationally.

A National Alcohol Strategy was released in March 2012 and included proposals such as the introduction of a minimum unit price and a consultation on a ban of multi buy promotions for alcohol.

There is an Alcohol Reduction Strategy for South Cumbria. The current priorities for 2011/12 with regards to alcohol are:

  • Proxy Sales - This is where an adult purchases alcohol for a person under the age of 18, which is illegal.
  • Preloading - This refers to the consumption of a large amount of alcohol at home before a night out.

Alcohol misuse is also one of the priorities for the area identified in the Health Profile of South Lakeland for 2011.

Every Action has Consequences - A campaign that has been launched to tackle violence resulting from alcohol after a Adam Rogers was killed by a single punch.

The South Lakeland Community Safety Partnership has also produced a booklet titled "Your Child and Alcohol".

Alcohol Awareness

A series of short videos have been produced by the South Lakeland Community Safety Partnership and Barrow Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership in conjunction with Cumbria Constabulary. The videos are aimed at parents and other adults, but are also suitable for younger people. They aim to show the potential impacts of drinking excessive amounts of alcohol.
