Woodland Burial and Green Funerals

Woodland Image 1Twenty years ago, there was only one green burial site in England (in Carlisle), but since then the numbers have increased to over 300, with more being planned. The aim of these burial grounds is to provide a natural environment encouraging a diversity of wildlife. Usually, headstones and memorials on the actual grave are not permitted, but often a memorial tree can be planted to mark the grave, and plaques can sometimes be fixed on a nearby wall. The semi-natural woodland and meadowland  created will, in time, become a permanent self-sustaining wood kept as wild and natural as possible.

The other aim of a green burial ground is that the environmental impact of the burial should be minimised by using biodegradable materials. Rigid cardboard or willow coffins, or shrouds only, are encouraged.

Unfortunately, South Lakeland District Council has not been able to establish an Woodland Image 2

area in its cemeteries specifically for woodland burial although it does support the concept and hopefully may be able to provide this option in future. The Cemeteries Office will offer advice on the nearest woodland sites.

Most Funeral Directors are aware that green funeral options are growing in popularity and will be able to offer suggestions for minimising the environmental impact of your choice of funeral. However, you should be aware that this is not necessarily a low-cost funeral option, and fees vary considerably.
