Windermere Cemy. 1Windermere Cemetery

Rayrigg Road, Windermere, Cumbria

This cemetery served the parish of St. Mary, Applethwaite and is sometimes referred to as St. Mary's cemetery, not to be confused with the burial ground of the Church of St. Mary.
It opened in 1888, and the first burial took place on December 20th.There is no land available for new graves, but burials still take place occasionally in reserved spaces.

There is a small section available for a limited number of new grave spaces specifically for the interment of cremated ashes. The cemetery chapel is disused and has been used for storage only for many years.

There is limited parking in the cemetery immediately in front of the chapel. There are no facilities in the cemetery other than a stand pipe for water for flowers.

The cemetery is situated off the A591 Windermere - Ambleside road, turning left at the Troutbeck roundabout, on to Rayrigg Road (for Bowness). It is on the left after 300 yards, opposite the Miller Howe Hotel, but the turn in beside the former cemetery lodge (now privately owned) is easily missed.

Windermere Cemy. 2The cemetery is administered from Kendal where all the cemetery records are kept.

This is a comparatively large cemetery, and intending visitors are advised to check grave location details with the office before travelling to the cemetery.
