Sedbergh Cemetery
Busk Lane, Sedbergh, Cumbria
This small cemetery serves the town of Sedbergh and
surrounding valleys. It is situated on the southern edge of the
town, on Busk Lane off the A684 Kendal Road. It is approximately a
quarter of a mile from the town centre and the Parish church.
The cemetery was presented to the Rural Sanitary Authority for
the people of Sedbergh by Mrs. Florence Upton Cottrell-Dormer of
Ingmire Hall. It opened in 1890 and the first burial took place on
31st. October. Mrs. Cottrell-Dormer also erected the gatehouse for
the use and comfort of visitors. In April 1974, the cemetery passed
to South Lakeland District Council following local government
reorganisation and the transfer of the responsibilities of
Sedbergh Rural District Council.

The Sedbergh, Garsdale and Dent parishes also transferred
from the West Riding of Yorkshire into the new County of Cumbria.
There are no non-denominational areas in this cemetery,
which is all Consecrated ground in accordance with the rites of the
Church of England.
There is an area for the burial of cremated remains. Parking
is available on the road outside the cemetery, and there is a
public WC in the cemetery, with a stand pipe for water for flowers
etc.
There is no permanent staff presence in the cemetery, and the
records are kept in the Cemetery Office in Kendal. Intending
visitors are advised to check with the office if they are unsure of
a particular grave location.
A popular path runs through the cemetery, and visitors
are asked to please keep dogs on a lead as they pass through.
