Sustainability Appraisal and Strategic Environment
Assessment
The Council must carry out a Sustainability
Appraisal of all LDFdocuments to appraise the social, environmental
and economic effects. All plans have to be prepared with a view to
contributing to the achievement of sustainable development.
There is also a requirement to carry out an Appropriate Assessment
of plans and policies to ensure that sites of European importance
for nature conservation will not be significantly affected.
The requirement for Sustainability Appraisal
will relate to all: Development Plan Documents (DPDs); and
Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs).
It is not a requirement however for The
Statement of Community Involvement, Local Development Scheme or
Annual Monitoring Report.
The purpose of Sustainability Appraisal is to
make sure that emerging policies and proposals reflect
environmental, social and economic goals, to help achieve the
overall aim of sustainable development.
Sustainability Appraisal Scoping
Report
The methodology for appraising
the sustainability of forthcoming Development Plan Documents
(DPDs) is set out in a Sustainability Appraisal Scoping
Report, as required for each Development Plan Document (DPD).
