Local Plan & Non Statutory Planning Documents
Updated October 2010
The South Lakeland Local Plan and Alterations form part of the
Development Plan for the area of South Lakeland outside the Lake
District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks. The Development Plan
forms the basis for land use planning affecting the area. The
Council adopted the Local Plan in 1997 and adopted the
Atlerations on 17 March 2006. A number of Local Plan
policies were replaced on the adoption of the Local Development
Framework (LDF) Core Strategy on 20 October
2010. The remaining Local Plan policies continue to
form part of the statutory Development Plan for South Lakeland
District (outside the National Parks).

Saved Local Plan Policies
Under the 2004 Act, Local Plan policies adopted when the Act
came into force in September 2004 were automatically saved after
justification for 3 years (or, if adopted after September 2004,
saved for 3 years from the date of adoption). The Secretary of State
confirmed that the South Lakeland Local Plan policies adopted in
1997 are saved beyond September 2007, until replaced by LDF
policies - with the exception of 4 policies R3, C4, C17 and Tr6,
which expired on 27 September 2007. The 4 expired policies are
crossed out in the Final Composite Plan (September 2007).Later, in
November 2008, the Secretary of State confirmed that the South
Lakeland Local Plan Alteration policies, adopted on 17th March
2006, are saved beyond March 2009, until replaced by LDF
policies.

The Council has also prepared a number of non-statutory planning
documents, including planning briefs, development briefs and one
master plan. These documents are to be declared for land charge
purposes in addition to the South Lakeland Local Plan
In addition, the Council has prepared non-statutory planning
policy guidance in relation to affordable and local occupancy
housing, as set out in its Interim Planning Approach to housing
