Naru boxers to visit Mayors Parlour
1 July 2011
The Mayor of Kendal, Cllr Jonathan Brook and
the Chairman of South Lakeland District Council, Councillor Sylvia
Emmott will be welcoming the national boxing team of Naru to South
Lakeland. On Monday 4 July at 6.00pm in Kendal Town Hall the
international visitors will have an opportunity to view the Mayors
Parlour and the historical items on display.
From 2 July, Kendal Judo Club will be hosting
a five-week training camp for the Nauru Boxing Federation and four
boxers along with their National Coach will be using the boxing
facilities to develop their boxing skills. Kendal Judo Club
has been prepared as a boxing training venue and has been
identified as an Olympic Training Centre in the build up to the
London 2012 Olympics.
Nauru is the smallest Republic in the world
and is situated in the South Pacific approximately twenty-five
miles south of the equator with a population of around 12,000
inhabitants. Boxing is fairly new on the island but they have
competed in the Oceania Championships and the 2010 Commonwealth
Games. One boxer won a Silver medal at the 2010 Youth
Olympics in Singapore. They have ambitions to compete at the
London 2012 Olympic Games but they must first qualify through the
Oceania Continent and are using the training camp to develop
further in the sport of boxing.
Chair of SLDC, Councillor Sylvia
Emmott, said: “I am looking forward to meeting the young
athletes from Naru and will offer them a warm welcome from the
people of South Lakeland. This training camp offers young
boxers from our area a wonderful opportunity to train with the Naru
team and both sides will gain valuable experience and
friendship.”
