SLDC confirms three trees to be felled in Kendal
31 July 2012
South Lakeland District Council will
shortly be felling three trees in Kendal following investigations
that show they are unsafe.
A mature Beech tree on Tenterfell is
showing signs of substantial decay caused by fungus, which means
that the tree can no longer depend on its root system for
stability. Therefore, the tree will be felled as soon as
possible.
At Hawesmead Park in Kendal, a
mature Cooper Beech has been found to be in an unsafe condition and
also requires felling.
In addition to this, a very large
mature Beech tree in the centre of Hawesmead Park has numerous
physical defects and is now in a condition where it needs to be
removed. SLDC is hoping that there will be sufficient good
timber from this tree to manufacture a number of seats that will be
placed in the park.
Cllr Clare Feeney-Johnson, portfolio holder for the
Environment, said: “It is disappointing to see well
established trees felled and we understand that they have enormous
visual impact and are valued by the local community. All the
trees have been carefully monitored and now have significant
physical defects. Unfortunately we have no choice but to fell
the trees to make the area around them safe. However,
we plan to make a number of park benches from the Beech tree and
these will be placed throughout Hawesmead Park for the whole
community to enjoy.”
