Flood Support Centre to close on 1st October
16 August 2011
A multi-agency Flood Support Centre for
people affected by the floods in Ulverston during 2009, will close
on Saturday 1 October 2011. South Lakeland District Council
has kept the facility open since November 2009, as it provided a
focal point for the community and offered helpful and useful advice
from a number of organisations on how to deal with the aftermath of
flooding.
The Flood Support Centre, based at the
council’s depot at North Lonsdale Road, housed a range of
facilities including washing machines, tumble driers, a fridge,
toaster, kettle and a microwave.
Councillor Ian Stewart, portfolio
holder for Central Services, said: “At the time of the
flooding in November 2009, the Flood Support Centre became the
heart of the local community and offered facilities that were not
available at home. The centre was popular and well used at
the beginning, but as people have gradually moved back into their
homes, the original need has diminished and it was never intended
to be a permanent facility. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank all the people who have taken care of the
Support Centre since it’s opening in November 2009 and the
organisations who helped set it up.”
Anyone who still needs advice or support in
any way, or has a query about the closure of the Flood Support
Centre, should call SLDC Emergency Planning officer on 01539
