SLDC energy switching scheme extended to Monday 8 April

25 February 2013

South Lakeland District Council’s energy switch scheme has been a huge success with over 1,100 households registering for a better price on their energy costs.

Now the scheme has got even better.  Because of the response to the scheme, SLDC has decided to extend the registration period and people are now able to register until Monday 8 April.  The auction will now take place on Tuesday 9 April.

This will give more people the opportunity to join the scheme as other local authorities are taking up the initiative and joining the auction. The more people that register, the bigger the discount on energy costs are likely to be.

People who have already registered do not need to do anything apart from spread the word to family and friends as the more people that join the council’s scheme; the more people will share the benefit of lower energy costs.

Cllr Clare Feeney-Johnson, Deputy Leader of SLDC, said: “South Lakeland District Council initiated this scheme and it has proved to be such a success that other local authorities are now joining us in trying to keep energy costs low for our residents.  This is a great opportunity for us to join forces with other local authorities to bring even more discount to everyone registered.  We urge everybody who knows about the scheme to tell their friends, family and neighbours to join Power up Your Community now and save money on their energy bills.”

Power up Your Community was launched in January in association with The Bay and Lakeland Radio.  Since then people have been signing up to the collective energy switching scheme with the hope of seeing their energy bills reduced giving them more cash in their pocket.  Registration is easy with people being able to sign up either online via the SLDC website www.southlakeland.gov.uk/ or by calling the SLDC Contact Centre on 0845 050 4434 or by visiting one of the council offices in Kendal, Ulverston or Windermere.  The new deadline for registration is Monday 8 April.

At the auction, energy companies will bid for the custom of all those registered and an offer with a price for energy supply will be sent to everyone calculated on their usage.  Only then will people decide whether they wish to accept the winning supplier’s offer or not.  Following the auction on 9 April 2013, a personal offer will be sent to everyone registered during the week commencing 15 April 2013.
