DirectGov provides a breakdown of useful information

Schools
Admissions & Appeals
The Co-ordinated Admissions Arrangements requires parents
to complete a single admissions application form indicating 1st,
2nd and 3rd preference secondary schools.
Cumbria School Admissions provide information, as do the
Advisory Centre for Education. You can
apply for a Primary School online, as well as a Secondary School
Transfer, however you are advised to view supporting information on
the County Councils website before completing the online
process.
