Dealing with Disability.

The Council has a commitment to ensure improvements for the disabled, and elderly of the district, to enable them to lead as full a life as possible.  For further evidence of our commitment please read the SLDC Accessibility Policy or our Equality & Diversity Policy.
 
Children
Every day over sixty children in the UK are born or diagnosed with a serious disability and the vast majority of them are cared for at home. Contact a Family is a UK charity providing support and advice to parents whatever the medical condition of their child. Cumbria County Council also provides advice on  Children with Disabilities
 

Money and Financial Assistance

South Lakeland District Council provide a number of grants which can be used to benefit Disabled people.  Disability Access Grant, and a Grant for Disabled Facilities

Disability Access Grant

The Department of Work & Pensions is also responsible for a range of benefits and services for people who are sick or have a disability. The Disability and Carers Directorate (DCD) supports disabled people and their carers, whether or not they are able to work. The directorate is responsible for providing an efficient, reliable and considerate system of Disability Benefits, and for all disability civil rights issues.

If you have a low income or suffer from a prescribed condition you may be able to claim help with NHS health costs like prescriptions, dental treatment and glasses.
 

Support for people with disabilities

DirectGov provides information on how to achieve Independent Living, and we can also provide Aids & Adaptations for Disabled Council Tenants, or housing advice such as Sheltered Housing & Careline
 
Cumbria Care - Community Services for Older People and People with Disabilities, a range of options covering Care Planning, Accomodation with Support, Named Carer and Respite Care.  Cumbria County Council provides practical advice and support on many aspects of disability, principally..
Cumbria County Council can also provide advice regarding Occupational Therapy and Services for Disabled Adults
DirectGov provides a wealth of information on community living, housing schemes, nursing and care homes, local transport, going to court, voting on their web pages for  Disabled People web page, whilst the Aidis Trust provides useful advice on how technology can help disabled people.
 

Learning, Education and Employment

From pre-school to adult training, find out from DirectGov, about learning for children and pupils with Special Educational Needs learning difficulties or other disabilities. As well as Funding & Disabled Students Allowance and Employment advice.
 
The Kepplewray Project provides training in disability awareness and also undertakes access audits to premises in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act.
