The Council has a commitment to ensure improvements for the
disabled, and elderly of the district, to enable them to lead
as full a life as possible. For further evidence of our

Children
Every day over sixty children in the UK are born or diagnosed
with a serious disability and the vast majority of them are cared
for at home.
Contact a Family is a
UK charity providing support and advice to parents whatever the
medical condition of their child. Cumbria County Council also
provides advice on

Money and Financial Assistance
South Lakeland District Council provide a number of grants
which can be used to benefit Disabled people. Disability
Access Grant, and a Grant for Disabled Facilities
Disability Access Grant
The Department of Work & Pensions is also responsible for
a range of benefits and services for people who are sick or have a
disability. The Disability and Carers Directorate (DCD) supports
disabled people and their carers, whether or not they are able to
work. The directorate is responsible for providing an efficient,
reliable and considerate system of Disability Benefits, and for all
disability civil rights issues.
If you have a low income or suffer from a prescribed condition
you may be able to claim help with NHS health costs like
prescriptions, dental treatment and glasses.
Support for people with disabilities
DirectGov provides a wealth of information on community
living, housing schemes, nursing and care homes, local transport,
going to court, voting on their web pages

Aidis Trust provides useful advice on
how technology can help disabled people.
Learning, Education and Employment
The
Kepplewray
Project provides training in disability awareness and also
undertakes access audits to premises in accordance with the
Disability Discrimination Act.
