Licence: Boatman

Under public health act 1907 if you wish to hire out or take charge of commercial vessels carrying 12 or fewer passengers you must be a licensed boatman.  

The licences are in the form of a restricted licence or a full licence.

Restricted Licence

A restricted licence applies to persons hiring out vessels and does not include the navigation of pleasure craft to be used for the carrying of passengers.  In order to qualify for a restricted licence an applicant must:

  1. Be 18 years of age or over
  2. Demonstrate a knowledge of their company's codes of safe working practice and emergency procedures
  3. Have a full knowledge of all statutory rules, regulations and bye-laws applicable to the water or waters for which the licence is required
  4. Not suffer from any disease or physical disability which could affect their ability to assist in the hiring of the vessel/s.

Full Licence

A full licence is required by persons who hire out or take charge of the navigation of pleasure vessels used for the carrying of passengers.  in order to qualify for a full licence an applicant must:

  1. Be 18 years of age or over;
  2. Demonstrate a knowledge of their company's codes of safe working practice and emergency procedures
  3. Have a full knowledge of all statutory rules, regulations and bye-laws applicable to the water or waters for which the licence is required
  4. Not suffer from any disease or physical disability which could affect their ability to assist in the hiring of the vessel/s
  5. Complete a declaration as to their fitness
  6. Satisfactorily complete a practical boat handling assessment.

Licences are issued on an annual basis. They are not transferable and cannot be backdated.

We may suspend, or revoke a licence at any time whenever they deem such suspension or revocation to be necessary in the interests of the public.
