Walking around South Lakeland
Family Walks In the Lake District
Sprayway walking routes are perfect for families.
Starting from classic destinations throughout the county there
is a shorter route for little ones and a longer one for the more
adventurous, so the whole family can get out and enjoy the best of
the Adventure Capital - the lake district.
Rydal and Loughrigg Terrace
Both of the routes start and finish at Rydal Water car park and
follow the same directions until you reach Rydal Caves. Once you
have finished exploring the caves the little ones can complete the
shorter green route and older ones can carry on along the blue
route for another 1.2km before meeting up back at the car park.
Coniston Water - Torver Back Common
The western shore at the southern end of Coniston Water is
overlooked by a little group of hills called Torver Back Common.
The slopes of the hills sweep right down to the lake where a
mixture of fast running becks, old gnarled trees and secretive
gravel beaches make the perfect backdrop for fun and adventure.
Little ones can explore just over a mile of shoreline while the
bigger children can discover some lovely tarns on a longer 3 mile
route.

The Cistercian Way
A route along the paths, tracks and byways of the low limestone
hills that fringe the northern shores of Morecambe Bay via
woodlands to Hampsfell and Cartmel Priory to Cark and Holker Hall.
The route then continues over the sands of the Leven Estuary, but
this is dangerous and should only be attempted with the recognised
Sand Pilot. Otherwise the train should be caught to Ulverston where
the Way continues by Dalton to Furness Abbey and the coast.
The route is only partially marked on OS mapping and it is not
clear which paths to follow between Cark and Ulverston. www.ldwa.org.uk/ldp/members/show_path.php?path_id=81
Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
Walking is probably the best way to explore the AONB; go quietly and you will see birds, mammals,
perhaps even the occasional reptile and plenty of insects. The
limestone, coastal and woodland scenery provide a stunning backdrop
come rain or shine and whether you are looking for walks with
children or something a bit more strenuous, it is all here waiting.
