Centre
Kendal, home of the famous mint cake, has a rich and varied
history and offers great shopping, eating and attractions for you
to explore at your leisure.
11.00am - Visit Abbot Hall Art Gallery
and the adjacent Museum of Lakeland Life. Located in
Kirkland, the oldest part of Kendal, the Georgian elegance of Abbot
Hall provides an historic setting for an outstanding collection of
fine art. Lakeland watercolours hang alongside works by Romney,
Ruskin, Constable, Nicholson and Freud. Groups can enjoy high
quality temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The Museum of
Lakeland Life shows how our Cumbrian ancestors worked, lived and
entertained themselves over 200 years.

12.30pm - Time to break for lunch and sample
one of Kendal's many eating places.
1.30pm - Leave Kendal on the A6, join the A591
south, turning off on the A590 signposted Barrow. Leave the A590 on
the A6 again following signs to Levens Hall (total distance 5
miles).
2.00pm - Arrive at Levens
Hall. An Elizabethan mansion, built around a 13th century
pele tower. Home to the Bagot family containing superb panelling,
plaster work and period furniture. Many paintings and the earliest
English patchwork. The world famous topiary gardens were first laid
out in 1694 by Monsieur Beaumont. Location for the BBC's "Wives and
Daughters".
5.00pm - Depart Levens Hall for journey
home.
