From Looms to Legends, An afternoon in the Dales

11.45am - Begin your scenic journey to the attractive market town of Sedbergh, nestling in the foothills of the magnificent Howgill Fells. Still in the county of Cumbria, but just within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Journey time from Kendal takes approximately 3/4 an hour.

12.30pm - Arrive in Sedbergh. The Town retains its old-world charm with its cobbled yards and historic houses, some of which still display signs of traditional industries. Whilst here have a look at the beautiful parish church of St Andrew or pay a visit to Farfield Clothing, makers of quality outdoor wear.

Time too for lunch in one of Sedbergh's tearooms or pubs.

1.45pm - Leave Sedbergh for Farfield Mill Heritage and Arts Centre

2pm - Just outside Sedbergh is Farfield Mill Heritage and Arts Centre. A former Victorian woollen mill now housing the work of some 15 arts in studios, plus other fabulous works of art in the onsite gallery. Heritage display, coffee house and craft shop and Victorian looms, working most days.

3pm - Leave Sedbergh for Kirkby Lonsdale, a lovely market town set in the beautiful Lune Valley.

3.30pm - Arrive in Kirkby Lonsdale. Visit St Mary's churchyard, where this beautiful view of the River Lune inspired a painting by Turner and admiration from John Ruskin, and is now known as Ruskin’s View. A footpath along the riverside leads from Kirkby Lonsdale town centre to the legendary 12th century Devil's Bridge which spans the River Lune.

Kirkby Lonsdale has an excellent range of specialist shops, attractive 17th and 18th century inns and a fine Norman church. An ideal place to treat yourself to afternoon tea!

5pm - Leave Kirkby Lonsdale and journey back to your accommodation.
