Windermere and Bowness
Bowness-on-Windermere is located at the lakeshore on
Bowness Bay, and the town of Windermere is just a short stroll
away. There is plenty of easy walking around the lakeshore
and on the lower slopes of the fells.
Windermere is also the name of England's longest lake and you
can explore its length and breadth on one of the many sailings
offered by
Windermere Lake
Cruises all year round.

The scenery is
breathtaking. Sailing and canoeing are on your doorstep and
challenging activities such as gorge scrambling, rock climbing and
paragliding are close at hand.
South Lakeland District Council owns the bed of Lake
Windermere. The Council lets moorings for boats of any type up to
11 metres in length and provides dinghy and tender storage at Ferry
Nab as well as winter storage for yachts on trailers. The
Lake Wardens operate between 09.00 and 21.00 daily from Easter to
mid-September and 09.00 to 17.00 at other times (the office is
closed on Christmas Day). The Lake Wardens also carry out bye-law
enforcement for the Lake District National Park Authority and
provide an emergency Search and Rescue service as required under
the control of the Coastguard Agency. For full details of the Lake
Wardens services visit
