Kendal, home of the famous mint cake and the gateway to the Lake District, is a lively market town with speciality shops in cobbled streets and yards .  There are high street names too, modern shopping centres and K Village Outlet CentreKendal Market is held Kendal Castle - Dave Willisevery Wednesday and Saturday and Kendal Farmers Market is held on the last Friday of each month.
 
Overlooking the town are the ruins of the 13th century Kendal Castle from which Brewery Arts Centre - Hannah Gibsonthere are fine views.  The Parish Church is one of the widest in the country, Kendal Museum one of the oldest and Abbot Hall one of the finest small art galleries in Britain. 
Other attractions include the Museum of Lakeland Life and the internationally renowned Quaker Tapestry.  The Brewery Arts Centre and Cinema offer a full programme of events all year round. 
 
The railway station 'Oxenholme - The Lake District', which is on the main London to Glasgow line, is on the outskirts of the town.  There is also a branch line with connecting trains to Kendal, Burneside, Staveley and Windermere.
