Arnside
A large village on the shores of the Kent Estuary which
forms part of Morecambe Bay on the Cumbria/Lancashire border.
Arnside has a beautiful setting looking out to the Lakeland fells
and with its specialised flora and fauna it is no wonder it
has been designated an Area of Oustanding
Natural Beauty.
Arnside and the surrounding area has much to offer
visitors, in wildlife, walking and history. Pretty shops line
Arnside promenade. You can admire the views whilst sitting
outside one of the local pubs looking across the estuary
towards Grange and the Lakeland peaks.
Low limestone hills, marshy plains, and deciduous woodlands
characterise the surrounding land; copses, hedgerows, and pasture
add to the mix. The Arnside and Silverdale area is considered a
last remaining stronghold of the red squirrel which feeds on the
cones of Scots Pines on nearby White Scar. It has sites of
scientific interest because of the rare butterflies and alpine
plants that may be found around the limestone pavements.
Every summer guided walks across Morecambe Bay start
at Arnside. Please note: There are dangerous quicksands
in the Bay and you should never cross the Bay without an official
guide.
