Licence - Boatman
To hire out or take charge of commercial vessels carrying 12
or fewer passengers you must be a licensed boatman.
The licences are in the form of a restricted licence or a
full licence.
Restricted Licence
A restricted licence applies to persons hiring our
vessels and does not include the navigation of pleasure craft
to be used for the carrying of passengers. In order to
qualify for a restricted licence an applicant must:
- Be 18 years of age or over;
- Demonstrate a knowledge of their company's Codes of
Safe Working Practice and Emergency Procedures;
- Have a full knowledge of all statutory rules, regulations
and bye-laws applicable to the water or waters for which the
licence is required;
- Not suffer from any disease or physical disability which
could affect their ability to assist in the hiring of
the vessel/s.
Full Licence
A full licence is required by persons who hire out or take
charge of the navigation of pleasure vessels used for the carrying
of passengers. in order to qualify for a full licence an
applicant must:
- Be 18 years of age or over;
- Demonstrate a knowledge of their company's Codes of
Safe Working Practice and Emergency Procedures;
- Have a full knowledge of all statutory rules, regulations
and bye-laws applicable to the water or waters for which the
licence is required;
- Not suffer from any disease or physical disability which could
affect their ability to assist in the hiring of
the vessel/s;
- Complete a declaration as to their fitness;
- Satisfactorily complete a practical boat handling
assessment.
Licences are issued on an annual basis. They are not
transferable and cannot be backdated.
The council may suspend, or revoke a licence at any time
whenever they deem such suspension or revocation to be necessary in
the interests of the public.
