The Village Society received a large number of enquiries from our members last week when details of the planned development came to light, in fact there was near panic in the village resulting in an open meeting on Monday evening.

I am writing in my capacity as chairman of Cartmel Village Society to give our views on the plan to build up to 80 new houses in Cartmel. While we agree there is a need for some affordable housing in the village we are concerned about the large number planned and that our existing traffic and parking problems would be exacerbated by any increase in the population.

We are also worried that the houses will not go to people with a local connection eg young adults who have had to move to away from their families to Kendal, Ulverston or further afield as they could not afford to buy or rent in Cartmel – is there any provision to ensure these people will have priority?

The open spaces are an intrinsic part of the village and the whole character of the village would be changed if these open spaces were built upon.

If the sites in East Cartmel or South East Cartmel are the preferred options what plans have been made to cope with the resulting extra traffic on Haggs Lane and through the village?

There is currently very little in the way of amenities for the youth of the village who tend to congregate in the children’s play area. Will any additional facilities be built along with the new houses?
I believe the local Secondary School is already over subscribed and having to turn children away – has any thought been given to the effect of an increase in local population on this situation?

I would be grateful if you would keep us informed of any further developments in this matter.
