We strongly support the designation of a green gap as this approach is critical in preventing damaging suburban sprawl which substantially undermines the attractiveness of the Ulverston area both in terms of key professional and skilled workers, that local companies need to recruit often from other areas of the country, and tourists. The quality of the landscape and the accompnaying quality of life is one of the key positive attributes of the Ulverston area.
What change(s) would you suggest for this part of the Report?
We would not suggest any change.

Furness Enterprise strongly oppose the use of the words 'disproportionately dependent on manufacturing' which suggests SLDC see this as a weakness rather than a strength. Elsewhere in your analysis of Kendal you identified that the local economy suffers from the dominance of low paid, low added value jobs. The Ulverston area has a unique cluster of high added value, knowledge intensive engineering jobs which need nurturing not neglecting. Manufacturing is a strength which needs recognition and support. Good manufacturing jobs also support the town centre economy as the workforce has discretionary income to spend on restaurants, wine bars, clothes etc.
What change(s) would you suggest for this part of the Report?
Eliminate the sentence "The Ulverston economy has been......with the rest of the UK" and substitute with "The Ulverston economy still benefits substantially from a range of high added value, knowledge intensive manufacturing industries even though rationalisation and restructing brought about by global competition has occurred".

Furness Enterprise strongly support the above preferred options as crucial to the economic health of the town centre which in turn is crucial to the attractiveness of the Ulverston area for economic investment, attraction of skilled and professional labour and tourists. One of the reasons local companies wish to remain in this area and invest in it is that local senior management like living here.

It is important there is a clear view and ability to implement where the much needed next major Ulverston Employment Regeneration site will be. The Ulverston Canal Corridor is logical but needs now to take into account the consequences of the major planned GSK redundancies and the regeneration of redundant GSK land.
What change(s) would you suggest for this part of the Report?
No changes except for the recognition that the GSK redundancies make the real development of a major Employment Regeneration site even more urgent.
