We would support the retention of a green gap as shown on the functional area strategy diagram to deliniate a separation of Ulverston from Swarthmoor. This makes the area far more attractive as a tourism destination and secures the historic site of Swarthmoor Hall within its context and setting in a rural location. The Cistercian Way - a popular footpath long distance footpath also runs through this proposed green gap area. The Woodland Trust manage an area of woodland which has only in recent years been well managed to form a popular and well used footpath which connects with the Cisterician Way route.

5.25 The Market Towns Initiative Tourism Programme for Ulverston and Low Furness has to date (2007 figures) shown a significantly strong growth in tourism revenue from 2006 to 2007 compared to the central Lake District National Park area with a growth in tourism expenditure of 4.3% compared to thethe LDNP (South Lakeland) growth of 4.6% (indexed figures). Comparisons with other parts of the county showed that Ulverston and Low Furness also performed better in terms of tourism revenue growth than Allerdale (+1.4%) and Copeland (+2.5%). Targeted support for marketing and product development through the MTI concentrated on one area has delivered measurable benefits to the economy. During the period 2003 to 2007, 68 additional FTEs have been created directly and through the supply chain network. This represents an increase of 8.8% in the total number of FTEs supported by tourism activity in Ulverston and Low Furness since 2003. The MTI programme started in 2004.
What change(s) would you suggest for this part of the Report?
Paragraph 5.28
Would ask that the slip stream brand Coniston and the Lake District Peninsulas is included. This covers the area of Coniston, Coniston Lake and Ulverston and Low Furness pertinent to the South Lakeland area.
