What the Council has to do and what it may choose to do
The Council is obliged to undertake a number of statutory
functions. The main ones are listed below. Whilst these services
have to be provided it is a matter for the Council to
decide whether the level of resources allocated to each of these
functions is proportionate to the need or the risk.
- Building and Development Control
- Council Tax and Housing Benefits
- Elections
- Homelessness
- Crime and Disorder
- Waste Collection and Recycling
- Food Safety and Water sampling
- Health, Safety and Licensing
The Council tries to maintain a balance between those duties
that are essential and the other services which reflect the desires
of local people. The level of resources allocated to these
discretionary areas of activity will depend on their relevance to
the Councils Vision and the importance given to the related
objectives.
Discretionary services currently provided include -
- Car Parks
- Public Conveniences
- Economic Development
- Recreation and Leisure
- Tourism
- Grants to Voluntary Organisations
- Parks and Gardens
