Free Public Procurement Course for Businesses
The Government has launched an on-line procurement course called
"Winning the Contract". This is a FREE resource to help
businesses (and in particular SMEs) learn about public procurement
and how to bid for public sector contracts.

Notice of Publication of Statement of Gambling Policy
Gambling Act 2005
A revised Statement of Gambling Policy was approved by South
Lakeland District Council on 10 December 2009. The policy sets out
the principles to be applied by the licensing authority when
exercising its functions under the Gambling Act 2005.On 23 December
2009 South Lakeland District Council published the Policy.
The revised Statement of Gambling Policy comes into force as from
29 January 2010. The published policy is now available for viewing
on the council’s website (see below) and at the Reception of
South Lakeland House, Lowther Street Kendal Cumbria LA9 4UQ during
normal office hours.

a Business Rate reduction. Business owners should

The LEAD Programme in Cumbria
LEAD is an innovative leadership programme specifically created
for owners of small businesses with up to 20 employees. The 10
month programme provides hands-on advice, expert coaching and
practical support to help you tackle real-life issues, and enable
you to make decisions with confidence. LEAD is being delivered
across the North West by 13 providers, supported by the NWDA. The
University of Cumbria is the only provider in Cumbria.
The programme will be running in five locations in Cumbria over
the next three years: Workington, Carlisle, Penrith, Ambleside and
Furness. LEAD requires 2-3 days commitment a month for 10 months.
This is a high value course supported by the NWDA resulting in a
maximum cost to your business of just £2,000. Several funding
opportunities may be available to reduce this cost further, subject
to meeting relevant eligibility criteria.

District Council has joined forces with Cumbria Rural Enterprise
Agency and Kendal Futures to provide free
business advice and support to independent retailers.

Highway Stewards
Cumbria Councy Council have been phasing in a number of Highway
Stewards to sort minor highway issues reported to a new
Highways hotline. This service includes cleaning and
repairing road signs, emergency pothole repairs and a range of
other routine maintenance jobs. Anyone can report
